Chrono: Photoreal Product Motion Without A Studio

Photorealistic 3D animation of mechanical watch movements for a brand whose product is too small, too reflective and too intricate to film convincingly.

The Problem

Chrono's selling point is the movement inside the case, which is a few millimetres across, highly reflective and in constant motion. Macro photography of it had been attempted twice and produced images that looked expensive but explained nothing. Customers on the product page could not tell what they were paying for.

What We Did

  • Modelled the movement from the manufacturer's own engineering drawings rather than from photographs
  • Built physically accurate materials for brushed titanium, sapphire and polished steel
  • Animated the escapement at real speed, then again at one tenth speed for the explanatory sequence
  • Produced an exploded view that reassembles, which is impossible to shoot practically
  • Delivered fourteen assets: hero loops, product page clips, social cutdowns and stills
  • Handed over the scene files so future colourways can be rendered without remodelling

Once the movement is modelled correctly, every future product photo is a render setting rather than a shoot.

Why It Worked

Building from engineering drawings rather than reference photographs meant the geometry was correct rather than approximate, which is what makes photoreal renders survive close inspection on a retina display. The exploded reassembly sequence became the most watched asset on the product page, because it answers the question the price tag raises.

The Compounding Return

The model is now an asset rather than a one off deliverable. Chrono's next three colourways will be rendered from the same scene at a fraction of the original cost, which is the argument for 3D over photography for any product with variants.
